The objective of this activity is to promote breast wellness and breast cancer awareness in the Zamboanga community.

We are so thankful for the overwhelming support here in Ciudad Medical Zamboanga, partners in the Zamboanga City community, friends from other parts of the Philippines and from abroad who shared in the Advocacy by contributing old and used bras to complete the Art as well as decorated bras too for the Installation Art and for the B.R.A.rt Exhibit, now at Lantaka Hotel.

The Ciudad de Zamboanga B.R.E.A.S.T. (Bra to Raise Early Awareness for Screening and Treatment) Installation Art is named as such to honor the whole Zamboanga City community who contributed to the CMZ BRA Campaign Project.

This May 14, 2014, the Ciudad B.R.E.A.S.T. Installation Art may now be viewed at the PASEO DEL MAR, the main park of Zamboanga City until July 15, 2014.

TRANSFER OF THE CIUDAD DE ZAMBOANGA B.R.E.A.S.T. INSTALLATION ART TO PASEO DEL MAR

I would like to share this wonderful "BAYANIHAN" story during the transfer of the CMZ Bra to Raise Awareness Campaign Project highlight, the CIUDAD DE ZAMBOANGA B.R.E.A.S.T. INSTALLATION ART!

B.R.E.A.S.T. means
Bra to Raise Early Awareness for Screening and Treatment

This Ciudad de Zamboanga B.R.E.A.S.T. Installation Art is  created by the Sulu-born, international artist Rameer Tawasil with artist friends, CMZ staff, trainees and affiliates and partners in the community jointly working with him to finish this innovative advocacy artwork.

The gigantic B.R.A. Art has these dimensions:
Total height including stage: 4.27 m or 14 feet.
Height of stage: 1.22 m or 4 feet
Width: 4.88 m or 16 feet
Depth: 2.44 m or 8 feet

As of May 14, 2014, there is a total of 1580 bras making up this B.R.E.A.S.T. Installation Art with this breakdown:
= = = 505 decorated bras for the giant bra cups and straps. (right cup =181; left cup = 193; center = 14; right strap = 47; left strap = 70)
= = = 202 colored bras for the breast-shaped backdrop.
= = = 50 black bras lining outline of the breast-shaped backdrop.
= = = 441 black bras for the whole stage floor.
= = = 382 black bras for the three sides of the stage. (right side = 85; front side = 205; left side = 92)

We would like to thank Mayor Maria Isabel "Beng" Climaco-Salazar for allowing the transfer of the Ciudad De Zamboanga B.R.E.A.S.T. Installation Art through City Administrator, Antonio G. Orendain, Jr.!
Thanks also to Mr. Joselito "Joey" Wee, OIC-Paseo Del Mar for being so accommodating and supportive during and after the transfer!

Considering this massive size, it is indeed difficult to move the whole B.R.A. Art over to Paseo Del Mar and this entailed the Bayanihan Spirit to make this possible.

Bayanihan means:
Bayanihan (pronounced as bah - yah - nee - han) is a Filipino term taken from the word bayan, referring to a nation, town or community. The whole term bayanihan refers to a spirit of communal unity or effort to achieve a particular objective.

So I would like to share these pictures to demonstrate this!
Rameer Tawasil, primary artist and CMZ HR manager, Ma'am Juvee preparing the site!

Thank you to Maintenance/Engineering Section , ASEGCO Janitorial personnel , ANTHONY Security Agency Personnel,  Pharmacy Department Staff [Edsel, Rodel], Radiology Department, [Regine, Cristina, Radtech Interns] and the CMZ Tricycle Drivers Association and Richard
for helping in the transfer of the B.R.A. Art!

So here is the Team that made this happen.
Thanks especially for CMZ Administrative Officer, Ms. Ruby Ann Puzon and CMZ HR Manager, Ms. Juvee Calica for coordinating the transfer to Paseo Del Mar with City Officials and with the movers who made this possible with the Bayanihan Spirit.
Thanks again and we do hope that with the transfer of this innovative and creative art advocacy project, Ciudad De Zamboanga B.R.E.A.S.T. Installation Art to the main park of Zamboanga City, PASEO DEL MAR, we would be able to gain a wider reach for our B.R.A. advocacy campaign to the community and visitors to:
LOVE YOUR BREAST
HAVE THEM CHECKED!

Early Detection and Treatment Save Lives!

The City of Zamboanga is so proud to present the Ciudad De Zamboanga B.R.E.A.S.T. Installation Art, which was finally unveiled last March 21, 2014.*

B.R.E.A.S.T. means Bra to Raise Early Awareness for Screening and Treatment.

The Ciudad De Zamboanga B.R.E.A.S.T. Installation Art is the creation of Sulu-born International Artist, Rameer Tawasil together with Zamboanga artists, Ciudad Medical Zamboanga staff and partners in the community.

There is a total of 1268 bras making up this B.R.E.A.S.T. Installation Art with this breakdown:
= = = 508 decorated bras for the giant bra cups and straps.
 = = = 164 colored bras for the breast-shaped backdrop.
= = = 308 black bras for the whole stage floor.
= = = 288 black bras for the three sides of the stage.
Rameer Tawasil together with the GIANT BRA made up of colorful, decorated bras!!!

Last February 7 and March 12, 2014 were CMZ B.R.A. (Bra to Raise Awareness) Art Workshops with our staff as well as friends partners  in the Zamboanga City community who shared in the making of the wonderfully decorated bras! **

There were about 550 bras as a result of the two workshops and more were done after the workshop! There were contributions of Art bras from local artists (with Rameer Tawasil) and those which were mailed in from other places in the Philippines and with international participation, too!***

Thus, we can proudly call this an ART WORK of the ZAMBOANGA COMMUNITY deserving to be dubbed CIUDAD DE ZAMBOANGA B.R.E.A.S.T. INSTALLATION ART!

Chosen embellished bra art are now on display in Lantaka Hotel and soon in other parts of Zamboanga City while most of the art bras are part of this innovative public installation art!****

Here are close-up shots of this Advocacy Art: Can you identify which decorated bras were made by you?
with sequins, beads, ribbons and tinsel... and I see the bra I made!
painted bras done by the Zamboanga artists...
more ribbons, sequins, flowers and painted ones...
and the green one comes from CMZ Dietary Department!
I see a fish (this must be Jam's bra from Medical Records)...some tubes, ribbons and beads!
... and the violet one comes from West MinCom!
I see a sequined vinta and curacha (I know Charisse of Radiology made this!)...
and the tubings must be from Hemodialysis!

more painted and sequined bras!
the big black bra with pink flowers comes from Ward G's Decorated Bra Box!
with 15 decorated bras for the center strap
Here are pictures from Rameer Tawasil:
at the sides of the BRA:
38 decorated bras on the right strap and 50 decorated bras in the left strap
center part of the bra (midstrap) has 15 decorated bras
the back portion of the Ciudad De Zamboanga B.R.E.A.S.T. Installation Art with 164 colored bras.
this was changed to all  black bras for the sides of the stage:
76 black bras on the right; 144 bras in the center; 68 bras on the left side.
right bra cup has 212 decorated bras
the left bra cup has 193 decorated bras!

As we appreciate this Ciudad De Zamboanga B.R.E.A.S.T. Installation Art, let also think of the fertile minds, creative hearts and skilled hands of our partners in Zamboanga City and our friends from other parts of the Philippines and abroad, who gave their time, talent and treasure for the noble advocacy of BREAST WELLNESS and BREAST CANCER AWARENESS through ART!

I may not be the ideal person to talk about this, considering I am not the most healthy person around, but as I was going over BREAST WELLNESS and BREAST CANCER AWARENESS articles in the internet, I read about the American Cancer Society Guidelines for Nutrition and Physical Activity for Cancer Prevention which I know would be of interest to many of us.

The reference for this guideline is from:
Kushi LH, Doyle C, McCullough M, et al. American Cancer Society Guidelines on Nutrition and Physical Activity for Cancer Prevention: reducing the risk of cancer with health food choices and physical activity. CA Cancer J Clin. Jan-Feb 2012; 62(1):30-67

Achieve and maintain a health weight throughout life.
  • Be as lean as possible throughout life without being underweight.
  • Avoid excess weight gain at all ages. For those who are currently overweight or obese, losing even a small amount of weight has health benefits and is a good place to start.
  • Engage in regular physical activity and limit copnsumption of high-calorie foods and beverages as key strategies for maintaining a healthy weight.
Adopt a physically active lifestyle.
  • Adults should engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous -intensity activity each week, or an equivalent combination, preferably spread throughout the week.
  • Children and adolescents should engage in at least 1 hour of moderate- or vigorous-intensity activity occurring at least 3 days each week.
  • Limit sedentary behavior such as sitting, lying down, watching television, or other forms of screen-based entertainment.
  • Doing some physical activity above usual activities , no matter what level of activity, can have many health benefits.
Consume a healthy diet, with an emphasis on plant foods.
  • Choose foods and beverages in amounts that help achieve and maintain a healthy weight.
  • Limit consumption of processed meat and red meat.
  • Eat at least 2 1/2 cups of vegetables and fruits each day.
  • Choose whole grains instead of refined-grain products.
If you drink alcoholic beverages, limit consumption.
  • Drink no more than 1 drink per day for women or 2 per day for men.
Maintain a healthy weight throughout your life.
  • Balance calorie intake with physical activity.
  • Avoid excessive weight gain throughout life.
  • Achieve and maintain a healthy weight if currently overweight or obese.
Personally, weight is an issue for me, however, it is inspiring that it is written that "losing even a small amount of weight has its health benefits and is a good place to start"

I have also started to change my diet to vegetables (and sometimes fruit) and fish (but not exclusively) and have refrained from processed meat and red meat.
And I have never indulged in alcoholic drinks throughout my life...having allergy to alcohol helps!

As for physical activity, I guess I am failing in this aspect... although, I just started (as in 2 sessions) and I am hoping that I could continue this endeavor. I might still backslide since I have an upcoming trip next month... on the other hand, being in another country usually warrants a lot of walking!

I do have a greater chance of being sedentary considering my work and my passions (such as blogging), with specific mention of screen-based entertainment! I guess I can't completely stay away from this, right? ... I just have to develop my active side and decide to act on it!

I have to read and re-read everything that I am writing here for me to put these in action! I do hope my beginnings would eventually gain long-term commitment from myself.

Why don't you go over the guidelines, too and check out what you have been doing!

BREAST CANCER RISK FACTORS

When we talk about BREAST CANCER, one of the things we ask is: "What causes BREAST CANCER?" .

The cause of BREAST CANCER remains unknown...

BUT, we are aware that Early detection and early treatment save lives!

So instead of CAUSE, we talk about RISK FACTORS...
*    Risk factors we cannot control   AND
**  Risk factors we can control!

Most women with Breast Cancer have no known risk factors except that they are women!

Here are the RISK FACTORS which I gathered from the I CAN SERVE FOUNDATION website and which I would like to share with you.

RISK FACTORS
Risk Factors You Can’t Control
Being a Woman. Although men may also develop breast cancer, male breast cancer is extremely uncommon, occurring at a rate of 1% of its female counterpart.
Aging. The primary risk factor for breast cancer in most women is older age. Overall, 85% of cases occur in women 50 years of age and older.
Family History. Occurrence of breast cancer within the family increases your risk, especially if first degree relatives had it, like a mother, a daughter or a sister.
Personal History. Having had breast cancer before, even if successfully treated, poses the risk of a recurrence of the disease.
Estrogen Levels. High estrogen levels marked by starting menstruation before age 12, having menopause after 55, or exposure to estrogen in the environment increases risks.
Risk Factors You Can Control
Weight. Being overweight increases your risk, especially after menopause. Having more fat tissue means having higher estrogen levels, which can increase risk.
Diet. Experts recommend observing a balanced diet that is particularly low in fat and rich in fruits and vegetables.
Exercise. Regular physical activity – around 45-60 minutes, five or more days a week – is recommended.
Alcohol Consumption. Alcohol can limit your liver’s ability to control blood levels of the hormone estrogen, which can increase risk.
Smoking. Smoking is associated with increasing the risk of developing breast cancer by around one-third. Smoking also increases the risk of other diseases.
